Your Leather Sandals Will Last DECADES If You Do This

Your sandals once felt amazing. The soft nubuck footbed cradled your feet, and every step was pure comfort.
But that was then. Now, your sandals are compacted with dirt, grimy from sweat, and stepping into them feels more like a chore than a pleasure. You know they could feel good again, but no one ever really showed you how.
This common problem isn't a flaw in your leather; it's a gap in reliable information. Many people discard perfectly good leather goods because they lack the simple, repeatable skills to restore them. I want to change that.
Today, I’m going to share a straightforward routine to clean, revive, and soften your nubuck sandals. You'll go from hard, matted fibers to soft, refreshed comfort, making your sandals feel good and look great for years to come.
Gather Your Supplies for the Refresh
Before we dive in, let’s get everything ready. Having your tools at hand makes the process smoother.
For nubuck care, I highly recommend the Leather Honey Suede and Nubuck Care Kit, which Trenton and Heath over at Southern Polished have vetted and approved for their sandals. This kit includes a brush, eraser, and cleaner specifically formulated for suede and nubuck.
Remember that nubuck is smooth leather that has been sanded down, exposing its fibers to give it that distinctive soft, suede-like feel. Because these fibers are less protected, nubuck requires different care than smooth leather.
Dry Cleaning: Lift the Surface Dirt
The first step is always dry cleaning. Think of it as preparing your canvas.
Use a soft brush or a clean microfiber cloth to gently remove any loose surface dust and debris from both the straps and the nubuck footbed. Skipping this crucial step can actually grind dirt deeper into the leather, potentially damaging the soft nap. Take a moment to lift those initial layers of grime.
Erasing the Grime: Restore the Nap
Once the surface dust is gone, it’s time to tackle the compacted areas.
Take the suede and nubuck eraser and gently rub it onto any compacted, shiny, or affected spots with light pressure. As you rub, the eraser works to lift dirt, grime, sweat, and oils, transferring them onto the eraser shavings.
Brush off the excess shavings with your suede brush as you go, then repeat on the same spot as needed. For most nubuck footbeds, this eraser alone is often all you’ll ever need to restore that buttery feel.
Deeper Cleaning: When Stubborn Stains Persist
Sometimes, you're dealing with more stubborn issues like deeply compacted dirt, heavy grime, or even salt stains from the pool or ocean. That’s when you need a specially formulated cleaner.
Apply a small amount of the cleaner from your kit onto a clean microfiber cloth. Gently rub it into the affected areas. It is always important to spot test first; apply a tiny amount to a hidden portion of your leather and observe the results before proceeding.
Continually move to a clean portion of your cloth with a little more cleaner as you wipe for the best results, then repeat the process across the entire footbed. To prevent water spots, it is important to clean the entire nubuck footbed rather than just one isolated area. If you notice a water ring forming, moisten the entire footbed so it dries uniformly without rings.
As a practical tip, if your straps have become a bit limp, you can use a rolled-up towel inside them while they dry to help them regain their shape.
The Final Revival: Brushing the Nap Back
Once your sandals are completely dry, don't be alarmed if the fibers appear matted down and hard. This is where many people mistakenly think their suede or nubuck is ruined. It isn’t.
This is the final, crucial step: we need to brush back those fibers and revive the nap. Simply take your suede brush and gently lift those fibers up again. If the brush alone isn't quite enough to achieve that desired softness, grab your suede and nubuck eraser once more to really tease those fibers back into their soft, buttery state.
It is important to remember that nubuck does not need conditioning creams or waxes; these can flatten the fibers and completely ruin that soft, inviting texture you've just worked to restore.
Conditioning Smooth Leather Straps (Only!)
While the nubuck footbed is now good to go, pay attention to your sandal straps. Many quality sandals, like the Southern Polished pair I often use, feature smooth leather straps—bison leather, in this case.
For these smooth leather portions, you will want to use a quality leather conditioner. I use Leather Honey Leather Conditioner for mine. Apply a pea-sized amount directly onto the smooth leather straps. Crucially, do not apply any conditioner onto the nubuck footbed, as this will flatten its fibers and may alter the texture. Focus solely on the smooth leather portions.
Protection: Guarding Against Future Stains
For an extra layer of defense against unexpected spills like ketchup or mustard during your next outdoor gathering, consider applying a protectant.
You can use the Leather Honey Suede and Nubuck Protector on your clean, dry sandals. Hold the spray about 6 to 8 inches away and apply a few pumps. You do not want to saturate your sandals; a light, even coat is sufficient. Let it fully dry for 24 hours, then apply one to two more coats for optimal results.
Many chemical protectants on the market use "forever chemicals" that pose health risks. I appreciate that Leather Honey is dedicated to creating safer options, formulating this protectant without those harmful chemicals for your family's safety.
Long-Term Comfort and Style
This simple routine—dry cleaning, erasing, deep cleaning, brushing, conditioning smooth leather, and protecting—will help your sandals stay comfortable, look better with age, and remain on your feet for years. Caring for quality leather is a smarter, more sustainable choice than constantly replacing it.
